The story of the Battle of Badon
The Battle of Badon, or the Battle of Mons Badonicus, reportedly took place in Post-Roman Britain, during the latter part of the 5th or early 6th century. This engagement is acknowledged as a significant triumph for the Britons, putting a halt to the westward expansion of the Anglo-Saxon realms for a certain period.
The earliest mentions of this battle, attributed to the British clergyman Gildas, trace back to the 6th century. Today, it is predominantly renowned for its alleged connection to the figure later immortalized as the legendary King Arthur. While historical consensus on Arthur's existence remains uncertain, his name first emerges in the 9th-century Historia Brittonum, where he is noted as having played a role in the battle alongside Brittonic kings in a military capacity, although he is not explicitly identified as a king himself. Due to the scarcity of sources, there is considerable ambiguity regarding the battle's date, location, and specific details.
Despite the scholarly consensus affirming the occurrence of this battle, the twelfth encounter unfolded on Mount Badon, resulting in the fall of 960 men in a single charge led by Arthur, according to some accounts. Notably, Arthur himself was credited with striking down every one of them!
